Upper Wharfedale School has been accredited with renewed School of Sanctuary status. A special assembly was held on Friday 26 June 2026 to celebrate this achievement. We welcomed special guests, including Sir Julian Smith MP, members of the Craven District of Sanctuary and Ritaj Jalakh.
The school was first awarded School of Sanctuary status in 2019, when it became the first school in the Craven area to receive the accreditation.
The award recognises schools that go above and beyond to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone, including refugees, asylum seekers, and families who have come to the UK seeking safety and a fresh start.
Following his visit, Sir Julian said: “It was fantastic to visit Upper Wharfedale School and see first-hand the positive and welcoming environment that has been created for its students.
I enjoyed meeting staff and students, hearing about their experiences, and learning more about the school’s journey to achieving School of Sanctuary status.
This award is a significant achievement and a testament to the sense of community that runs throughout the school. Everyone involved should be immensely proud.”
